Annotated Song 2: Plumb’s “Cut” and Freud’s Dissociation

Plumb’s “Cut” is an episode of The drama “The Vampire Diaries”. In the first line “I’m not a stranger No I am yours” (Plumb) instantly reminds me of Sigmund Freud’s statement of dissociation of the personality. Dissociation is the splitting of consciousness, which means a person will show more than two personalities as if there is another self living in the body. This song seems to be telling the story of a hysterical patient with dissociation of the personality. The lyrics of “I may seem crazy Or painfully shy And these scars Wouldn’t be so hidden” (Plumb) perfectly shows two different states of a person,  and at the same time, I felt the person’s pain and trauma she received. The singer expresses her inner struggle by singing with sadness and despair. This song helps me to explore split personality and understand what dissociation is in a special way.
