Reflection of “Discomfort and Anger Caused by A Clinical Lesson”
This essay “Discomfort and Anger Caused By A Clinical Lesson” is about my feelings and thoughts of Andre Brouillet’s oil painting “A Clinical Lesson at the Salpetriere”. So the essay’s genre is narration. Besides, I want to tell people some of my opinions about the status of women at that time. I also attach great importance to the women should have rights, equality and resonate with readers in the meantime through this essay. I hope my narrative essay can give people inspiration to have different views on the painting.
For this essay, I focused on the female patient is treated rudely and disrespectfully based on my observation and analysis of Brouillet’s painting. I expressed my real feelings of uncomfortable with the lack of respect shown by the men towards the female patient in the clinical lesson; angry and sad with the low status of women in that era. That led to some of my thoughts are women were treated with disrespect in the old era. Therefore, I want to stand for women’s rights and equality between the genders, let more people pay attention to it. People who are interested in psychology and feminism, or who know and have seen this painting can be my potential audience for the essay.
From writing this literacy narrative, I learned how to develop my ideas by observing and analyzing the details of the painting. Through the discussion in class, I listened and got to know the thoughts of my classmates, which made me have more understanding and opinions about this painting. Those class discussions helped me get the essay started. Then I tried to connect these thoughts of the painting to my own opinion. This makes my essay more vivid and specific. In addition, I gained some valuable comments from the peer review. Then I revised the essay based on these comments to make it better. I think I still need to learn about grammar, make sure the grammar is correct and sentences are fluent in the whole essay. I struggle to organize language and express my thoughts in English. However, I will strengthen my English writing skills, continue to accumulate experience, learn from mistakes, keep practicing writing, and try my best to write every essay well.
